new year's day, 2011

Missed posting Friday, party because I forgot it *was* Friday. Thursday was my last day at work. An arctic cold front came in that morning, and by the time I left at midday it was snowing furiously, so I was glad to leave, and glad to get home. I think we had between 3 and 4 inches of snow here - not that much, but our first in a while. Yesterday was bitter cold, and last night even colder - a few degrees below 0 F., I think. And now I'm starting my third career.

Good weather for writing, though - there's no temptation to go out and work in the garden!

Tomorrow's my last day at work, and of course we have a winter storm warning, so I'm trying to get everything that's possible done today. I'm determined not to add to my paper storage problem at home - so (almost) everything here is being scanned and then shredded. Then I can put it all on one cd, and lose the cd ;-)

Maybe I can start writing again Friday.

Quitting the day job...

Time vs. money: it's always a trade-off, isn't it? Sometimes I feel like one of those late-medieval serfs I read about when I was in college, bound to the land and spending most of their days working for the lord, with only a little time to tend their own gardens. I don't know how accurate that picture is, since it's not a thing I've researched since, but it's always had a resonance for me. It certainly describes the part-time writer's life, where your creative work is always being interrupted by the insistent call of the Job. It's been particularly troublesome with the present book, which for various reasons is proving harder to write than my first three. So... I've decided to solve the problem.

As of December 31st, I'm retiring in order to write full time. I'm really looking forward to it!
