Thursday 2012.05.24

After a couple of days work, I think I have the Celtic calendar sorted out for the Druid's Son book. I'm now having to rewrite some segments of the manuscript to bring them into line with my calendrical (is that a word?) decisions. After that I can go forward again...

On more mundane topics, we had a good rain yesterday afternoon and last night, with the result that the garden (grass, weeds...) is now beginning to resemble a jungle... often happens this time of year when I'm behind with the mowing, as I currently am due to various mechanical problems.

Tuesday...

We spent the weekend in the Black Hills of South Dakota - one day w/ fair weather, one wet day, and one (the last) beautiful. We got back in time to see about three seconds worth of the eclipse as the sun dropped below the clouds and disappeared behind the mountains. We went up to the Hills for one of our favorite SCA events (some pictures coming later) and also paused on the way back to do a little wine tasting and take some train pictures.

I even got a little work done on the Druid's Son book on my laptop - going to have to revise some bits, but I think the result will be much better. I spent a good chunk of yesterday reading about the Coligny Calendar and trying to get my head around a purely lunar way of measuring time... much more appropriate to the story, but a real mental challenge initially!

Tuesday...

Contractors didn't show up as scheduled to replace the awning yesterday, so I called and told them not to bother - just invoice me for the roof and the gutters, and I'll get someone else to do the awning. Can't afford to waste any more time with these people - that makes three mornings shot for what should have been a one-hour job.

Getting ready now for some SCA merchanting this coming weekend - should be fun. And then maybe I can get some writing done at last...

Tuesday...

Yesterday's jam:

jam 001

Half strawberry rhubarb ginger, and half pie cherry rhubarb using some of my cherries from three years ago which I found in the freezer.

Monday....

Cool and damp today - too wet for digging, but it should be a good afternoon for making strawberry rhubarb preserves. There's a new page on the sidebar, where I've listed some of the Welsh translations I've done of ADF liturgical language.

Sunday...

Got two long beds tilled in the garden today. The construction situation goes from bad to worse... more info in a few days, but at least I'll be ready to plant tomatoes soon!

Friday...

...again, and the construction still isn't finished - they're supposed to replace the awning over the back door today, hopefully without breaking anything else. All of this work could, and should, have taken place within a week, ten days at the most, instead of being spread over almost two months. I'm not recommending these bozos to anyone.

Friday...

New gutters today. I think it will be at least a year before I could contemplate enduring any more home improvements, although this lot is at least more careful of the vegetation than the roofers were. And doesn't anyone in the construction business speak English?

Tuesday...

Got back from Known World Cooks and Bards and still recovering. Now it's suddenly summer here - forecast high today over 90, which should easily be a new record. Time to cut the dandelions again and start watering the grass!

Sunday...

After a run of summer-like weather, we're back to proper spring: 40's today, partly cloudy, with a strong north wind. Snow line was rather low on the foothills - close to 6000 ft, I think. A good day to stay inside and play with words. I designed a new promotional postcard for the local Druids, based on one of my Irish photos. I rather like it.
